The proc filesystem is an interface to several kernel data structures which behaves remarkably like a filesystem. Instead of having to read /dev/kmem and have some way of knowing where things are, all an application has to do is read files and directories in /proc. This way, all the addresses of the kernel data structures are compiled into the proc filesystem at kernel compile time, and programs which use the /proc interface need not be recompiled or updated when the kernel is recompiled. It is possible to mount the proc filesystem somewhere other than /proc, but that destroys the nice predictablity of the proc filesystem, so we will conveniently ignore that option.
